Dr. Messenger does evaluations for the Gifted Program which are deemed appropriate and acceptable for all school systems within the state of Florida and often other states as well, depending on their criteria.   Correspondence with the school, such as sharing the Gifted results, will take place upon parent request and written consent.

The two most common IQ tests used are:

• the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fourth Edition (WISC-IV)
• the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: Fifth Edition (SB-5)  

 

There are critical differences between these two instruments. They vary in factors such as how much emphasis is placed upon speed, numerical reasoning and paper-and-pencil manipulation. Dr. Messenger will determine during the session which test is a better match by administering a number of sample items from each test.

 

Regardless of the instrument used, the entire evaluation takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Because both instruments are complex and many items are untimed, the actual time needed to complete the evaluation varies from student to student. In cases where there is extra time, some achievement tests are administered (reading, writing and math).

 

The first 10-15 minutes of the test session allows both parent and child to become familiar with the testing room.  Some initial practice items are offered to the child, and rapport is established. Then the testing begins!  In the middle of the testing time, there is a short break. We have healthy snacks, bottled water and juice  in the office, but you are certainly welcome to bring your own snack as well.

 

At the completion of testing, Dr. Messenger spends up to an hour in consultation with parents reviewing the results.  Thus, you will know your child’s scores and eligibility status immediately following the evaluation.  The report will be mailed directly to parents within 7-10 days.  

 

A copy of the report and/or test protocol will be mailed to school personnel or physician only with a written authorization consent form previously completed and on file at Brighter Pathways.  Dr. Messenger strictly abides by all current privacy laws.
